Septic System Repair and Restoration for Rockwell Homeowners

Rockwell is a small town in eastern Rowan County. It covers 1.7 square miles and counted 2,302 people at the 2020 census. For homes on septic in and around Rockwell, the tank and drain field handle all the wastewater. When the field clogs, drains slow down and toilets gurgle, and soggy ground over the lines often follows.

Septic Samurai is based in Statesville, and Rockwell sits about 30 miles southeast of us. We handle septic system repair with biological drain field restoration, which brings back the drain field you already have. An aeration and bacteria unit goes inside your existing tank, and its bacteria digest the biomat that clogs the soil. Call or text (980) 291-3805 for a free on-site evaluation of the tank and the field.

Homes on septic in and around Rockwell

Rockwell was incorporated in 1911. The Yadkin Railroad was built through town, and US 52, the old Salisbury-Albemarle Highway, crosses NC 152 here. Rockwell's National Register listings include the George Matthias Bernhardt House and Zion Lutheran Church.

In 1953 the Salisbury Post called Rockwell an eastern Rowan County town of nearly 1,000 people. The 2020 census counted more than twice that. Census estimates count 1,121 homes in town, with a median year built of 1986. About four in ten were built before 1980.

Tanks from those decades were often set with the lids buried under the lawn. Most never got an effluent filter, since there was no riser to reach the outlet. Septic tank riser installation brings the lids up to ground level, so the tank opens for service without digging. An effluent filter on the outlet keeps undigested solids out of the field, and we clean it every visit.

Eastern Rowan ground, from Second Creek to Gold Hill

The town is thought to be named for a rock well north of town, on the old Peter Miller farm. It sat at a shady camping spot, and travelers praised its sweet water. Most wells in the area had lumber curbing, so a well lined with rock stood out. The town history also records a roller mill on Second Creek at Heilig's Pond, near Lowerstone Church.

A town named for good well water has reason to care about what soaks into the ground. The EPA notes that a failing septic system can release pathogens and nutrients into groundwater and surface water. A clogged drain field near a creek or a well is worth fixing early.

Gold was first discovered at Gold Hill, about 4 miles southeast of Rockwell, in 1824. Its Barnhardt and Randolph mines were called the richest east of the Mississippi. Around Gold Hill, the Rowan County soil survey maps soils weathered from Carolina Slate Belt rock. The survey names woodland and farming as the major uses of those soils.

Cid soils, described by the survey just southeast of Gold Hill, are moderately deep over rock. From December through May, a perched water table sits 1.5 to 2.5 feet down. Our septic aeration system feeds oxygen to bacteria that digest the biomat, so the soil can take water again. It cannot lower a seasonal water table, so we look at the tank and the field before we recommend anything.

Rowan County repair permits for Rockwell septic systems

Septic repair permits for Rockwell homes come from Rowan County Environmental Health. It acts as the agent of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. The county's wording is plain: no repairs other than routine maintenance may be installed without a repair permit. There is no fee for the county's site visit and the repair permit.

A Rowan County site evaluation weighs available space, restrictive horizons, soil characteristics, soil depth, soil wetness and landscape position. If you are not the property owner, you may still apply with the owner's written authorization.

Septic Samurai is a North Carolina certified septic installer. Our work is a retrofit inside the tank you already own, and nothing is replaced or expanded. We tell you before work starts if the county health department needs to be involved. The only digging is a shallow air line trench, and we call NC 811 first.

With the unit in place, pumping needs drop sharply because solids get digested instead of stored. When a tank does need pumping, we refer that out, along with tank replacement and new drain lines. Our guide to septic system permits in North Carolina covers the permit side in more detail.

Rockwell FAQ

Questions From Rockwell Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Rockwell. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (980) 291-3805

Does a septic repair in Rockwell need a Rowan County permit?
Rowan County says no repairs other than routine maintenance may be installed without a repair permit. Our unit is a retrofit inside your existing tank, and nothing is replaced or expanded. We tell you before work starts if the county health department needs to be involved. If a permit is needed, the county's site visit for it carries no fee.
What drives the cost of septic system repair in Rockwell?
The tank's condition and how hard it is to reach matter most. Buried lids mean adding risers, and an outlet with no filter means adding one. A long air line run from the pump to the tank adds work too. We give you a figure after a free on-site evaluation, so call or text (980) 291-3805.
Do you work in Gold Hill and the rest of eastern Rowan County?
Yes, Gold Hill sits about 35 miles from our Statesville base, well inside our roughly 50 mile area. Rockwell and part of Granite Quarry sit in Gold Hill Township, which runs south to the Cabarrus County line. Gold Hill itself is home to the Gold Hill Mines Historic Park. We also cover Salisbury, the county seat, and Kannapolis, about 14 miles from Rockwell as the crow flies.
Can I add a room or a pool on septic in Rockwell?
Rowan County inspects an existing septic system before you can get a building permit for an addition. The same check applies to new mobile homes and swimming pools. If your system is struggling, our septic system inspection can find the problem before the county visit. We do not do real-estate inspections, since in North Carolina those need a state-certified inspector.
What happens after an install in Rockwell?
Most installs are finished in a day, and year one of our septic maintenance plan comes with it. That year brings three visits, at about 30 days, 6 months and 1 year. Next come two visits a year, then one a year with a bacteria treatment once the system is stable. Each visit, we check the unit and air pump, clean the filter, inspect the tank and field, and add bacteria.
